In conversation with Lorraine Candy, award-winning journalist and author

The media powerhouse lets us in on her love of Cornish champagne, Tabasco sauce and Jerry Hall’s favourite wine

Written by Sophie Elliot June 2, 2021

A mother of four, an award-winning journalist with decades of experience and soon-to-be published author, Lorraine Candy is a multi-talented powerhouse. Formerly the editor of The Sunday Times Style magazine, ELLE and Cosmopolitan, Lorraine now co-hosts the chart-topping lifestyle podcast, Postcards from Midlife. This summer, she’s publishing her first book, ‘Mum, What’s Wrong With You?’: 101 Things Only Mothers Of Teenage Girls Know. As if this impressive CV doesn’t keep her busy enough, Lorraine is also passionate about open-water swimming and her family’s dog, Pixel – a Welsh Terrier who loves to sleep everywhere but her own bed. Lorraine’s ideal evening? A few episodes of Frasier, with a glass of Whispering Angel rosé in hand. We’ve just got one question: when can we come over?

The most used appliance in my kitchen is…

Our Sage coffee machine. Life changing for a coffee addict like me!

The one cookbook everyone should own…

One: Pot, Pan, Planet by Anna Jones. This is more than a cookbook, it will change the way you think about eating, cooking and shopping for food. It’s full of simple but unusual recipes for veggies and vegans, really easy to follow and also has good advice on avoiding food waste and how to cook absolutely anything left in the fridge. It’s about thinking of the planet with kindness, as we feed our families with kindness.

In my fridge you’ll always find…

Tabasco. I love it. It’s the only thing my family won’t touch!

Favourite item from The Sette is…

The hobnail glassware. I like the colour choice and with four kids, glasses get broken all the time – I am constantly replacing them!

My most memorable meal…

The first night meal on an icebreaker in Antarctica called the Kapitan Khlebnikov. My husband and I took a six-week sabbatical to go there 20 years ago, on a geological ship mapping the coastline. The food was stew, but we remember it mostly because they poured water all over the tablecloth to stop the plates slipping as the ship rolled with the rough sea. This happened every night…

No celebration is complete without…

Fireworks and Cornish Champagne from the Camel Valley, near where I grew up.

When I’m invited to dinner I always take…

Whispering Angel rosé. To name drop, Jerry Hall told me to do this because it’s all she drinks! I can’t sip it without thinking about her.

The restaurant I’m loving right now is…

Tandoor Chop House in Covent Garden.

My guilty pleasure is…

Old episodes of Frasier on Amazon Prime. I love Niles.

For dinner tonight…

Good God, who knows?! I usually have to cook a series of different meals for each of the kids, because I was daft enough to start doing it when they were little.

Jet-sette… favourite holiday spot?

Daymer Bay, north Cornwall in the shadow of the church where I got married – St Enodoc, at Trebetherick.

Sette the record straight… something people might not know about you?

Everyone knows I am addicted to cold water swimming but I can also ice skate. To be honest, there isn’t much people don’t know as I am a huge show off!! When I asked my 17-year-old this question about me, she replied: ‘That you’re a loser.’ This just about sums up how teenage girls feel about their mums (and that’s ok – it is perfectly normal for them to feel that way!)

Sunrise or sunsette… favourite time of the day?

Always sunrise, sunset makes me terribly melancholy.

Heart sette on… what’s on your wishlist?

To get back in the Cornish sea for a long, cold swim on my own.
