Celebrating the holidays with Gucci Westman
The legendary make-up artist lets us in on her favourite Fourth of July traditions
However you usually mark Independence Day, this year, it’s bound to feel a little different. The gradual easing of restrictions across many States means that most Americans can honour the day by celebrating with friends and family – and after months of lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, you’ll want everything to feel extra special. So who better to inspire you than the queen of cool, Gucci Westman? The California-born make-up artist, who has masterminded looks for celebrities including Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift as well as for numerous designer runway shows, is an icon in the industry. Here, she shares her favourite traditions, her top holiday make-up look and her tips for making the day as perfect as possible.
We usually spend the Fourth of July with family and friends but are pretty low-key with our celebrations. We’ll typically have a BBQ out in East Hampton, swim and watch the fireworks burst over the bay from Montauk.
My brother and I will usually cook seasonal foods like fish tacos and fresh salads. He’s an amazing chef – check him out on Instagram at @uncleniks!
I always love naturally bronzy, sun-kissed skin, but I might add a red lip this year for a bright pop of colour. Our Westman Atelier Beauty Butter Bronzer plus the tomato red shade from the Lip Suede Les Rouges palette would do the trick.
About 20 years ago, I took a memorable trip out to Martha’s Vineyard with my best friend’s family. It was super traditional – we watched a parade, went to the beach and had a festive cake – which was really fun for me because I actually grew up in Sweden.
We love playing a mix of hip hop, oldies, and classic reggae and ska tunes! I don’t have any particular favourites at the moment, but the whole family loves making Spotify playlists.
Now more than ever, it’s such a special time for tablescaping because everyone’s excited to entertain again! How much effort you put in sets the tone for an enjoyable occasion and arranging a beautiful table welcomes guests into your home. I love to think of all the details, from the glassware to the plates to the florals.
I love the crystal champagne coupes! I used the blue set for New Year’s Eve and the size is perfect. Overall, The Sette has such a well-rounded curation with a great mix of traditional decor and chic, whimsical offerings.
